New research results presented during MobileHCI conference in Taiwan show that people who type with both thumbs on a mobile device do so at an average speed of about 38 words per minute. Of which a higher pace, on average 40 words per minute, is achieved by people aged 10 to 19 years.
In 2018, it was checked how quickly typists do it. Most of them reach 52 words per minute. It is difficult to translate into Polish systems, because in our country we use the number of characters per minute to provide the pace of writing. Regardless, however, it can be seen that people "texting" on smartphones write only slightly slower than a professional typist. The fact should be taken into account that the word unequal and typists do not use abbreviations such as "CU" or "BRB", which can also be considered a word. They also don't use hints.
Children turn out to be 10 words faster per minute than their parents. So it may turn out that even a few generations of smartphone users will write on smartphone keyboards as quickly as a typist. With only two fingers, not ten, as is the case with typing on a full computer keyboard.
The study was conducted by a research team from the University of Aalto in Finland and ETH Zürich in Switzerland on a huge sample of over 37,000. people. Volunteers, 10 to 59 years old, simply took part in the test and submitted via the website typingtest.com run by TypingMaster Inc., which offers speed typing tests and training in this area.
The tests took place in English, so the researchers noticed the difference in speed between the participants. People for whom English is a native language have reached 37.8 words per minute. Others were slower – their rate was 30.4 words per min.
However, the most visible difference is related to the age of the test participants. Youth, from 10 to 19 years old, reach 39.6 words / min, and people from 50 to 59 years old reach only 26.3.
Also, those who write with thumbs are faster than those who use index fingers. Using auto-correction speeds up text input, but not using predicted text. It even slows down this process.
