Pera Rocha do Oeste will be represented at the largest fair for international exporters from China, starting Tuesday in Shanghai, to win over Chinese consumers, the industry association said on Monday.
"We will promote pear in this market and start making the first commercial contacts to advance work when it is authorized" opening, said Domingos dos Santos, president of the National Association of Pera Rocha Producers (ANP), to the Lusa agency. With its presence in China, the ANP intends to increase Pera Rocha do Oeste's international visibility and contribute to the increase of exports, through the reinforcement of foreign promotion.
We must have other alternative markets to overcome Brazil's economic crime, the Brexit in England and Russia's embargo on European products and China is a very populous market with purchasing power and consuming imported products, ”explained the leader.
China imports 3.8 million tonnes of fruit (in 2016), with average annual growth of 16% and a middle class looking for genuine, high quality products.
For the first time, the ANP will be represented at FHC – Food & Hotel China, the largest international exporters event in China, which will be held from Tuesday to Thursday. In this year's edition are expected 120,000 professional visitors in the 180,000 square meters of event size, where 3,500 companies from 43 countries are represented.
The governments of Portugal and China have been negotiating the opening of the Chinese market to Portuguese fruit. This week, the European Union and China also closed a historical agreement which aims to protect a hundred European Geographical Indications, one of them being the Pear Rock of the West. In this year's campaign, 200,000 tons of rock pear were harvested and 60% of this production is sold in international markets, with Morocco leading, followed by Brazil and England.
The ANP is developing an external promotion project, an investment of about 430 thousand euros which is funded 85% by EU funds from ERDF – European Regional Development Fund, under an application approved by Compete 2020 – Operational Program Competitiveness and internationalization. The ANP, headquartered in Cadaval, has 5,000 associated producers, with a production area of 11,000 hectares, equivalent to 85% of the entire Pera Rocha do Oeste cultivation area.
Pear rock is produced (99%) in the municipalities between Mafra and Leiria, with the highest production being in Cadaval and Bombarral, between the districts of Lisbon and Leiria. This fruit has Protected Designation of Origin, a recognition of the quality of Portuguese fruit by the European Union.
