Nicolau Copérnico (1473-1543), Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and Charles Darwin (1809-1882) were what we today call “counter-current”. Copernicus put an end to Aristotelian geocentrism, which was worth condemning him for going against the “Sacred Scriptures” (Bible; Joshua 10:13). Practically a century later, Galileo was in agreement with the heliocentrism modeled by Copernicus (From the revolution of celestial spheres, 1543) was condemned, having been forced, already in his seventies, to abjure on his knees before the Court of the Holy Roman Office (Inquisition). Charles Darwin (1809-1882) ended up renouncing creationism (fixism) and anthropocentrism based on biblical Genesis. He was also discredited and vilified. But, science has shown that either of them was right.
I believe that today no one doubts that the Earth is not a static planet and that we are descended from other hominids. The basic principles of evolutionism are, at present, well established by various branches of science. Evolutionism is not, therefore, a theory, but a natural phenomenon. Despite this, there are still fixists and educational establishments where it is expressly prohibited to teach evolution. In fact, I know people who do not even believe that man has ever been on the moon. It is in this state of obscurantism and credibility in myths that politicians, businessmen and religions intend to keep people in order to control them easily.
Today, we live in a similarly inquisitorial era for scientists. Science has irrefutable data from the present climate change due to human activities. In addition, the media has reported and shown (TV) the melting of the polar caps; rising temperatures (for example, 38ºC in the Siberia now in June), the disappearance, by submersion, of islands by elevation of the average level of the oceans (for example in the Kiribati archipelago) and the retreat of maritime coasts (for example Esposende and Caparica coast).
An example of the lack of ethics of politicians and governments has been failure of international summits about the environment.
Practically, it all started about half a century ago, in 1972, with the United Nations Conference on Development and the Human Environment in Stockholm, where representatives from 113 countries were present, without reaching a global and unanimous agreement.
It is easy to sign agreements, but the lack of decorum and ethics of the politicians who sign them means that these agreements are not enforced, as they know that they are not politically penalized. But the human population remains unaware of the serious environmental problems that can lead to the extermination of our own species. Just an example of what is happening in our country. There was some concern about school environmental education, right after two summits (Belgrade and Tbilisi, 1977), but this is, in practice, completely forgotten. Not only are there no environmental education programs at school, but public radio and television stations do not broadcast environmental education programs.
After so many years of international conferences, the lack of ethics of most of the world’s governments makes them continue to ignore the agreements, while at the same time shamelessly affirming that climate change is an invention of scientists and that development (rampant and highly polluting) is a sustainable development.
A very good example of this, very recent, was the Prime Minister, António Costa, having announced, on this year's "World Environment Day", that Montijo airport would move forward, as it is the most economically favorable place, despite knowing what this area will be submerged in this century. In this televised statement, the Minister of the Environment was missing to clap his hands, as well as the President of the Republic to “bless” the event. That is why I never collaborate in the “Celebratory Days” farce (see Público newspaper 2928: 11 (1998), “The farce of the commemorative days”).
World governments and politicians, like the Inquisition, try to discredit and even condemn climate experts who constantly warn of the unstoppable disaster that awaits us with climate change.
Just listen to government officials such as Trump, Bolsonaro, Maduro and quejandos, who I prefer to refrain from qualifying, to train ourselves that it is essential to elucidate the population as soon as possible, so that we will not have scientists arrested or condemned for not investigating for them. have withdrawn funding, and let us not move inexorably towards collective suicide.
An effective and enlightening environmental education and public radio and television stations with more scientific than political and demagogic programs are essential.
